Aeration
Six Benefits of Mechanical Aeration
- Reduces soil compaction
- Enhances root growth
- Decreases water run off
- Allows for more efficient watering and fertilization
- Penetrates heavy thatch (build up of more than one inch can be especially damaging to lawns)
- Enriches surface soil (the plugs are scattered on the surface and eventually break down to form a valuable top-dressing)
Compact soil, like Colorado's hard clay, prevents the grass from establishing a healthy
root system. The soil under lawns tends to compact readily because, unlike garden soil, it
is virtually never worked or turned. For the lawn, aeration is the alternative to tilling
and is generally recognized as the best way to improve air/gas exchange and water/nutrient
intake. In an effort to conserve water a regularly aerating schedule of 2 - 3 times per year
for the areas clay soil is advised, especially in the spring and fall.
>> Remember to water your lawn the night before a scheduled
aeration and mark your sprinkler heads.
